MADE IN BED is an art magazine and website independently run and produced by students from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London and New York.
We provide global insight into the art world through a vast range of perspectives, research, and creative endeavours of the Institute’s own student body and alumni.
We take our name from London’s iconic Bedford Square, referencing the home of the Institute’s London campus, where most students can be found furthering their knowledge, writing our articles, engaging in international discourse, and exploring new frontiers.
Editor’s Welcome —
From our little corner in Bedford Square, MADE IN BED occupies a distinctive position within the landscape of art world journalism. In its seventh iteration, MADE IN BED combines the enthusiasm and critical freedom of students across Sotheby's Institute—business, contemporary art, fine and decorative art, and luxury—to shed light on forces that weave together the world we love.
To love art is to question it. In a year of record-breaking auction results, brazen heists, billion-pound megaprojects and new collector demographics, our editors interrogate the stories and structures at the centre of these dialogues. We ask not only what is happening, but why it matters.
A long-standing champion of innovation, Emerging Artists showcases pioneers at the early stages of their careers. Interviews offers rare encounters with gallerists, curators and leaders driving our cultural scene. In Reviews, our editors trace their experiences of exhibitions and fairs, not limited to physical spaces but also digital and hybrid sites. In-depth investigations and reflections unfold in Features, whilst Art Markets directs focus to dynamics within primary and secondary markets. Social movements, minority representation and global shifts inspire discussions in Agents of Change, whilst En Plein Air brings the reader outside traditional red-brick confines to public and outdoor spaces. Finally, the Luxury Edit addresses the increasing integration and intrigue in luxury and fine art.
Of course, all of these sections are connected, in the same way corners of the art world continually intersect and intervene in one another. As Editor-in-Chief, it is a privilege to work with our formidable writers as they take on uncertainty and change. As a team, we hope that our contributions leave you not just with answers, but new insights and questions for how we experience art, and how it in turn exerts a special charm over our lives.
