About

A lot of Oscar’s work revolves around the idea of an artistic and otherwise non-verbal dialogue between the photographer behind the camera lens and his subject matter. From his earliest project, with his father, titled Conversation, in which he used projections to counterpose two perspectives simultaneously in one image, the theme of discourse has been a foundation for much of his work. Interest in family routed in the love for photography shared by his grandmother, once a photojournalist herself, has also remained an import thread within his work and one that continues to evolve.

In recent years, however, it is unarguably his “untraditional” education, in a photography school in India, that has significantly shaped his artistic direction and outlook. Taking photographs from the back of his friends’ motorbikes and working with Indian people’s inquisitive relationship with photography, Oscar discovered the prevalent themes of his recent work – the love of human faces and the way we occupy space. Constantly seeking for new inspiration, Oscar has moved to Barcelona to document protests and social stories that unravel on the doorstep in his barrio. Dedicated to his work and each stage of the photographic process, he hopes to continue learning and seeing where his projects take him next. As he puts it: “Photography requires dedication - you have to live it.”

Biography

Oscar Ramsay received an “untraditional” education in photography in an Indian photography school. This experience opened up his eyes to an unconventional, non-Western approach to photography which prevails throughout his work today.

In his professional career, he has had the opportunity to work with a widely exhibited photographer Nadav Kander, reviewing and documenting his career archive. This became a significant learning experience which reflected on his technique and his artistic outlook.

Currently residing and working on numerous projects in Barcelona, he has established Amigou Labs – a photographic darkroom and a printing lab in the heart of the city.
