 About

Recently selected for PhotoVogue by Vogue Italia and finalist for Rugby Photographer of the year, the artist Dongmin Kim explores the potential of the photograph in the sports world, primarily for elite rugby clubs in London such as Wasps FC and Richmond FC. Her practice focuses on this medium's ability to present colour and her perspective of reality. During her undergraduate studies, she started investigating the various ways of capturing the body’s movements through dancers and athletes. Focusing on sporting contexts, the main body of Dongmin's artistic production centres on the subject of women's rugby and tackling its insidious underrepresentation in the media. During the pandemic when all sports and theatres shut down Dongmin started to investigate new themes such as insomnia and time through self-portraiture as the main subject of her artistic research as it was what obstructed her movements the most. She is currently working on a self-portrait series focusing on ESEA (East and South East Asian) identity. It is a new series that delves into the importance of media literacy and social media’s impact on mental health. She develops a critique inside the wake of the pandemic when anti-Asian racism (largely Sinophobic in nature) has skyrocketed, with the UK alone reporting a 300% rise in hate crimes against ESEA diaspora.
